SCOREGolf Magazine, the voice of Canadian Golf, announced recently the 2011 list of Canada’s Best Public Golf Courses and  Eagle Ranch Resort has been ranked as 8th in British Columbia and Silvertip Resort as 13th in Alberta.

SCOREgolf is known for it’s Top 100 Courses list, which describes the best private and semi-private courses in Canada, and while informative and entertaining, many don’t have access to ever play this list. The Best Public Courses list is intended to be used as a players guide and offers scores in each category and some editorial opinion on their favourites and some of what they consider to be hidden gems.

This list, compiled by a panel of industry experts, was aired recently on TSN and the magazine will be released at news stands soon.

Keeping a positive attitude and focusing on future success rather than dwelling on past failures are common goals for many in life. Those who find success in business learn from mistakes and apply knowledge to the tasks that lay ahead. Successful golfers are no different.

We all hit bad golf shots; that is inevitable. The best golfers in the world hit bad golf shots. It’s how we deal with those mistakes that truly determine the outcome of a round of golf. To become a better golfer we need to accept that we will make mistakes and not every swing will be our best swing. After a bad shot, quickly analyze what may have gone wrong, learn from it and move on. The only shot in golf that matters, is the one you’re about to hit. Previous shots or future holes have absolutely no bearing on the shot you’re preparing to hit.

Someone that continually replays the bad shots in their mind is setting themselves up for failure. The old self-fulfilling prophecy; if you think you are going to fail then you probably will.

Learn from your mistakes and let them go. Dwelling on the negatives will cause your game to go downhill and your scores to go up. Let it go. Positive reinforcement and replaying your best shots will lead to increased success in your mind and on your score card.

Alignment has a major impact on your swing path and inevitably where your golf ball ends up. By adjusting your alignment you are also able to learn how to curve the golf ball (hitting a draw or a fade).  As in previous web lessons we will be using a right handed player as an example.

Alignment 1:  Square – If you were to lay a club in front of your toes and across your shoulders they will both be pointed directly to your target.  In a “square alignment” the center of your chest will be pointed directly at your golf ball.  This “square” alignment will give you the best opportunity to hit the ball straight.

Alignment 2:  Open – If you were to do the same exercise as in our “square alignment” by laying a club in front of your toes and along your shoulders they will be pointed to the left of the target.  In an “open alignment” the center of your chest will be pointed slightly towards the direction you are trying to hit the ball.  In an “open” position your swing path will be slightly altered and will see the club swing away from your body in the backswing and feel more like a cutting across action in the downswing.  This cutting across action will impart side spin on the golf ball and make it “slice” away from your target line (start a bit left and go to the right).  This is a major reason that when you are playing no matter how much you aim to the left the more the ball slices to the right.

Alignment 3:  Closed – As in the previous two alignment positions the “closed” position will see the club in front of your toes and along your shoulders be pointed to the right of your target.  In a “closed alignment” the center of your chest will be pointed slightly away from the direction you are trying to hit the ball.  In a “closed” position your swing path will again be altered and  you will see the club swing towards your body in the backswing and away from your body on the downswing (start a bit right and curve to the left).  Hitting a “draw” may take a little practice but will increase your distance and your ability to eventually hit the ball straight.

Have you lost your marbles?

Several years ago, I had the game of golf described to me in very unique and accurate way. I have since shared it many of times with fellow golfers and students.

 Lets start with three containers. The first container is half filled with green marbles. Green marbles represent the great golf shots we hit during a round. The second container is also half filled, only with red marbles, representing the bad golf shots we hit during a round of golf. The third container is filled right to the top with black marbles. These marbles represent the average golf shots we hit during a round. Some average shots are better than others, but they would all be considered just that: average.

 Now, we take all three containers and pour them into one large container and shake them up and here’s where it gets interesting. In your mind, I want you to play a few holes of golf. Before each shot, reach into the container and pull out a marble.  The color you pull out dictates the quality of shot you hit: good, bad or average.

 What do all these colored marbles mean? We hit more average shots than good or bad. (If you remember that the black marble container was full, the others only half full) While on the course we can’t really ‘choose’ what shot we are going to produce, it is to some extent random.

 What we can control is how good our black marbles are, in other words, how good our average shots are. Rory McIlroy obviously has a jar made up of different marbles than you and I. However, the ratio of black, green and red marbles is the same. The difference is the average shots of a Pro are better than the average shots of a beginner.

 Improving the quality of your marbles can only take place over time and through practice. The more time spent practicing the better the quality of marbles. Once we step onto the course on a given day our marbles are as good as they get! We can do nothing in the immediate term to improve what marbles we pull out of the jar. We can however, have influence on decreasing the quality of our marbles; this is accomplished by losing focus, letting negative thoughts into our mind etc. In short, we can’t make ourselves better without practice, but we can make ourselves worse.

 Think about that the next time you’re on the course and feeling that you can’t do anything right… are you contributing to the color of your marbles?

Golf Course Management is an aspect of the game that is often overlooked. The average player adds costly strokes to every round due to uneducated decision making. Prior to picking your club for the upcoming shot, take a moment and survey possible options and evaluate which play makes the most sense. It only takes a moment to evaluate shot options and it will save you strokes. You’ve all heard the expression “play the percentages” this applies to golf in virtually every shot we play. Don’t set your self up for failure by trying the high risk shot; don’t select the club that you have to strike perfectly in order to have any hope of success; don’t leave yourself in a position where your next shot is even harder than the last. Most importantly, don’t try to make up from a poor shot with a miracle shot.

Jack Nicklaus once said he never played a shot on the course that he hadn’t practiced off the course, think about that the next time you find yourself debating whether or not to lay up or go for the once in a life time shot. Choose the shot that is best suited to your abilities and for those of us that don’t play golf on TV; that is the easier shot.
