Born in Wainwright, Alberta, Guy J. Turcotte graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1972 with a diploma in Gas Technology (honours). He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Tulsa, and earned an MBA at the University of Alberta. In 2001, in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in the oil and gas industry, he was inducted into the Engineering and Natural Sciences Hall of Fame at his Tusla alma mater.
His long and successful career in the oil and gas industry includes his founding of Chauvco Resources Ltd. in Calgary in 1981. The $2 million of public capital that was originally invested became $1.3 billion by the time the company was sold in 1997. Guy was founder and chairman of both Western Oil Sands Inc. and Fort Chicago Energy Partners L.P. with market capitalizations of $4.5 billion and $1.7 billion.
But Guy’s interests are not confined to what lies beneath the earth. He holds a lifelong love of nature and in particular the Canadian Rockies. In the early 1990’s it was this love that led him and three partners to acquire 600 acres of pristine Rocky Mountain wilderness just to the east of Banff National Park in Canmore, Alberta, and to reserve 200 of those acres as wildlife corridors in perpetuity. This was the genesis of Silvertip Resort, named for the Silvertip Grizzly. Later the group also acquired Eagle Ranch in Invermere, British Columbia. In 1993, inspired by an ancient creek bed on the slope of Silvertip, the company that holds both of these resorts became known as Stone Creek Resorts.
Today, Guy is Chairman, President and CEO, and majority investor at Stone Creek Resorts Inc. His overriding concern is to ensure that every action taken at the resorts is in harmony with and inspired by the land itself. The company has recently launched Stone Creek Resorts Club. With two locations, Silvertip Resort and Eagle Ranch Resort, the Resorts Club is an entirely new way to vacation, providing a way for members to enjoy multi-million dollar residences and five-star service without having to lock up significant capital. In planning this vision, Stone Creek has developed a truly sustainable resort community model that respects the environment and pocketbook, without compromising luxurious, hassle-free vacation time.
“Our Resorts Club gives people an opportunity to have a second home at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the environmental footprint, while allowing the resorts to have a higher level of occupancy to support the amenities and activities.”
But perhaps the most visionary element in Stone Creek’s offering is what the guest never sees: green building practices, careful energy management and sustainable operating practices. Members don’t need to worry about the unsustainable power demands of maintaining a year-round vacation residence and can instead rest easy knowing they are enjoying the land responsibly.
Also part of this vision is the Village at Silvertip, which will be constructed as a vibrant, pedestrian- friendly destination. Its architectural language builds on the sensibilities and beauty of European hill towns, the same architecture that influences the great château-hotels of the Canadian Rockies. Silvertip Village is inspired internationally, but grown locally through indigenous materials and a deep respect for the landscape.
“I feel strongly that happiness comes from when we connect with others with generosity. This is why my vision for the Stone Creek Resorts Club involves a resort community – a lively place for people to be with one another, not just a private piece of property in the country. Now the good life is something you share, not something you own; the time we spend with those we love is far more valuable then the possessions we accumulate.”
