Tip from the Pro – Steve Haggard explains “The Grip”

The Grip – the most important fundamental as it is the only part of you that touches the club and the club hits the ball.  You cannot achieve you full potential without a sound grip.

For this tip, Steve Haggard, Eagle Ranch pro, refers to the right handed player.

 Top Hand (Left Hand)

  1.  Place the butt end of the club under the muscular pad at the inside heel of your left hand.
  2. The shaft should run down your left palm into the top joint of your index finger
  3. Crook the index finger around the shaft and you should be able to support the club with the index finger and the pad of the palm.
  4. Now just close the left hand (fingers before thumb).
  5. The pressure in this hand will be delivered from the top three (3) fingers (baby, ring and index).

The bottom hand is slightly more complicated as it overlaps the left but with a little practice will become very comfortable and will increase consistency and power in your swing.

 Bottom Hand (Right Hand)

  1.  Extend your left index finger straight and insert it between the baby and ring finger of your right hand (so they interlock).
  2. The shaft of the club should now run down the fingers of your right hand (below the palm) the grip should be a finger grip.
  3. The pressure to hold the club will be applied by the two middle fingers (middle and ring)
  4. At this point wrap your right hand over top of your left thumb that is running down the shaft of the club.
  5. When in the correct position the right thumb should be resting gently on the left side of the shaft.

By practicing putting your hands on and taking them off the club this grip will become second nature very soon.
